But As Who?

Peter Sarsgaard (Dead Man Walking) has been cast in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman, which will star Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, and it has been speculated that he could play Harvey Dent, the District Attorney who becomes Two-Face.

Reeves tweeted as much yesterday –

We Got This Covered previously reported that True Detective star Matthew McConaughey was in talks to play Two-Face.

The character has appeared a few times on the big screen now, Billy Dee Williams in Batman (as Harvey Dent only), Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever, and Aaron Eckhart in The Dark Knight.

Sarsgaard is joining a fairly impressive cast including John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman.

Reeves has been having fun announcing them on his Twitter account –

Meanwhile, Pattison suggested his portrayal of the character will show a dark side –

Batman’s not a hero. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero – there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other.”

“I love the director, Matt Reeves, and it’s a dope character. His morality is a little bit off. He’s not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character.”

The story will apparently focus on Bruce Wayne’s younger years. It’s claimed the film will be set during the 1990s and could show a fresher, less-grizzled version of the Caped Crusader making use of his detective skills, rather than brute strength. And Reeves revealed the film will feature “a rogues gallery” of villains getting up to no good.

The Batman opens on June 25th, 2021.
