So here it is. Thirteen years after the original was released, which after a brief interruption by Avengers: Endgame retained its crown as the highest-grossing movie of all time, the sequel has a trailer. Avatar: The Way Of Water is coming out this Christmas and the full trailer has just been released.

So, what do we think? There has been much debate around Avatar here. Some say its a massive hit, yet strangely empty. Some say the world has moved on. Others say this is James Cameron and he never lets us down. Critics point to the total lack of pop culture impact of the world of Avatar. Others mention the stunning Disney experience, the successful re-releases of the original, and the ever-lurking Chinese market ready to turn out in their millions.

Avatar 2
“Look, all I’m saying is 13 years is a long time to keep people waiting.”

It is fair to say that nobody quite knows how the return to Pandora will go, performance-wise. How about creatively? What did you think of the trailer? Engaging, or a technology demonstration?

The $250 million budgeted sci-fi adventure will be out on December 16th and there are already sequels in the pipeline, with Cameron having the story he wants to tell mapped out right to the end.

Avatar 2 Tatts
Do you even lift Blue Bro?

Avatar 3 started filming simultaneously with Avatar: The Way Of Water in New Zealand on September 25, 2017. The last two sequels have been reportedly greenlit, but Cameron stated in a November 2017 interview:

“Let’s face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don’t make enough money, there’s not going to be a 4 and 5.

Avatar 3 cast member David Thewlis later confirmed this in February 2018, stating:

“They’re making 2 and 3, they’re gonna see if people go and see them, and then they’ll make 4 and 5.”

Avatar Terminators
Even the Terminators are getting some of the Avatar action!

This approach was confusing when Weaver stated in November 2018, after the first two sequels had completed main photography, that she was currently already working on  Avatar 4 and 5 which several media outlets interpreted as confirmation that the last two sequels had started filming.

What about you? Has this trailer shown you enough to get you into the theatre and to make you lay out the extra for the 3D glasses all over again?
