Film Will Premiere On Netflix

Netflix has released a teaser for sci-fi action movie Space Sweepers, which is being considered South Korea’s first big-budget space movie.

The film explores the fictional adventures of a ragtag crew that makes their living on space salvage. But the characters, working in the year 2092, have a more practical matter on their minds as they try to make a living in a dangerous environment.

The official Netflix synopsis reads –

“Set in 2092, Space Sweepers takes place aboard the spaceship Victory, one of many vessels surviving on scavenged space debris. The film stars K-drama favorite Song Joong-Ki (The Battleship Island) as the ship’s genius space pilot, popular actress Kim Tae-Ri (The Handmaiden) as a mysterious ex-pirate, Jin Sun-Kyu as a spaceship engineer, and Yoo Hai-jin as the reprogrammed military robot Bubs. After successfully snatching a crashed space shuttle in their latest debris chase, Victory’s crew discovers a 7-year-old girl inside. Realizing that she’s the humanlike robot wanted by UTS Space Guards, they decide to demand ransom.”

Space Sweepers, directed by Jo Sung-hee (A Werewolf Boy), is considered South Korea’s first big-budget action epic set in space. It was supposed to be released in Korea during last summer’s blockbuster season but was postponed to September due to the pandemic. With Korean cinemas still toiling, Netflix has stepped in and nabbed the worldwide streaming rights.
Characters include space pilot Tae-ho (Song Joong-ki), ex-space pirate Captain Jang (Kim Tae-ri), spaceship engineer Tiger Park (Jin Sun-kyu), and military robot, Bubs (Yoo Hai-jin).

Space Sweepers launches on Netflix February 5th.
