As you all know, the return of Henry Cavill as Superman has made me happier than a pig in shit on a rainy day. There is an abundance of interviews and a (father-killing) tornado of rumors flying around, so put on some John Williams, sit back and enjoy.
Very, Very And Very
Cavill recently sat down with Deadline to talk about his return as Superman, and even though he said in 2019 that the “cape was still his”, he knew the future of Superman was outside of his control.
“As an actor, you have to learn that there are things out of your control, no matter what you may think, no matter how your performance was, no matter what factors were not in your control in the first place, no matter how the audience feels.
It was something which I had to very gently hold onto in my heart because I didn’t know whether I would have the opportunity to play it again, But the opportunity was very important to get again, and I’m very, very lucky and feel very privileged to have that opportunity now.”
Whether you liked Man Of Steel, Batman v Superman, or Snyder’s Justice League, or you didn’t (because you are a heathen), no one can deny that Cavill was always 100% dedicated to the character and his performances showed that. Henry added that he was drawn to Superman given the beauty he perceived within the character.
“There’s something so true and honest and hopeful, which is the best of all of us, and I love that. I think it’s the thing that we all truly yearn for, deep, deep down, which is goodness, and everyone else being good, and good to one another, and helping one another. Even at our most cynical, I think that deep down, that’s what we want.”
In a genre that is now oversaturated with mediocrity and many actors using comic book movies as either a healthy paycheck or a launch pad for their careers, it’s refreshing to see an actor so dedicated and respectful of a character, especially the one that started it all, Superman.
DC, Warner Bros/Discovery, and comic book movies are a much better place with Cavill and Superman back.
The following bits and bobs are completely unsubstantiated from the internet so, as usual, this is rumor control. But boy, oh boy, they are juicy.
Cavill’s Superman Deal
Over at GFR, their sources say that Henry has signed up for a three-picture deal. These include Man Of Steel 2, Black Adam 2, and get this, Justice League 2!
I have no idea in what order these films will appear on the big screen but I’m hoping for Man Of Steel 2 before a Black Adam sequel. Fans are crying out for a solo sequel to 2013’s Man Of Steel so for me it makes sense to get Henry back first and then let that lead into Black Adam 2 before the Justice League sequel.
I think it’s safe to say that Justice League 2 will be last on the list, especially knowing The Rock’s ego won’t want him sitting out on such a spectacle. By the time JL2 comes out, we could be at least 8 years down the line… the return of The Snyder for it too? You know I’d like a slice of that action!
Man Of Steel Reboot
Another rumor from GFR, (those guys seem to have a hard-on for Cavill’s return that matches my own), states that MOS2 will actually be a reboot of the Superman origin that we saw in Snyder’s Man Of Steel.
Sources are saying that newly appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran want a lighter tone for the DCU and want to use whatever happens in next year’s The Flash, as the perfect opportunity to erase the darker aspects of the Snyderverse.
Their main concern is the killing of General Zod. Some cry babies didn’t like it even though it’s actually canon that Superman was forced to kill Zod. Even Reeve’s Superman killed Zod back in 1981 and everyone just laughed and got on with it. But those were the glory days when men didn’t get pregnant and women didn’t have dicks.
Reeve’s Superman depowered Zod, and threw him across the Fortress Of Solitude before he fell several hundred feet into an abyss. So spare me the talk of MOS being too dark and killing Zod was not in Superman’s nature.
Anyway, I’m hoping this rumor is fake, and to be honest, I’m calling bullshit on it. Man Of Steel is beloved by most DC fans regardless of the noisy minority, changing the events of the movie to start afresh seems ill-advised and disrespectful. Unless they change the nature of Jonathan’s death, I admit that was poop.
The Man Of Spiel
Last and certainly not least are persistent rumors that arguably the greatest movie director in cinematic history is being touted to direct Man Of Steel 2.
That’s right, none other than Paul Feig is set to… no, no, wait, I mean Steven Spielberg. Yeah, Steven Spielberg was recently seen with Zaslav having lunch, which eventually grew to include Christopher Nolan and DC Studios’ co-CEO Peter Safran.
Cavill has spoken publicly of his hopes for a lighter tone to his portrayal of Superman, and it seems Gunn, Safran, and Zaslav are all on board too.
Back in the day, Steve was synonymous with heartfelt movies full of hope and optimism. Films that made you root for the good guy against all the odds. Magical movies that not only shaped cinema but our own childhood imaginations too.
If Steve can tap into his old magic from yesteryear, I can’t think of a better way to effectively relaunch the DCU with Superman and give us that old skool vibe that made us all fall in love with movies. Zaslav, you sir are a crazy genius!
