Are streamers in trouble? We have often raised concerns of marketplace saturation with so many options, and belts tightening as inflation stays high and household budgets shrink. Netflix has lost subscribers for the first time. Growth is plateauing for others. Now they are stripping content off platforms.

Ostensibly, this is to enable them to licence the content to others, allowing them to raise revenue. So they need to cash? Alternatively this content pool was so wide to tempt you in, and now that you have subscribed they are cutting back on content. Or a bit of both.

Warner Bros. Discovery has already pulled seasons 16-31 of the original Looney Tunes library off HBO max. The Loony Tunes catalogue available on Max now stands at only 25% of the total.

Now seasons 4-6 of Hanna-Barbera’s The Flintstones has also been yanked. That is 78 episodes.

Internal wooden dollars were moving from HBO Max to Warner Bros. Discovery in a licencing deal. HBO Max decided not to renew the deal as it needs to cut costs. The licencing deal won’t be renewed. They also pulled existing Westworld, The Nevers, Raised By Wolves, and The Time Traveller’s Wife.

Infinity Train, Aquaman: King of Atlantis, and Close Enough had already been yanked from HBO Max, with Batman: Caped Crusader being allowed to be shopped to other platforms.

Starz has also been pruning. Becoming Elizabeth and Step Up are being pulled, while Dangerous Liaisons was cancelled, and then also pulled.
