Lucasfilm has released the first teaser for the next cab off the Star Wars rank for Disney+. Star Wars: Andor will be with us on August 31st for the now-standard drop of the first two episodes. It will then continue weekly.
The series will focus on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, from Rogue One, and tell of his journey towards becoming the Rebellion’s key operative at a time when the newly formed Empire is spreading its tentacles and the Rebellion is starting to rise. He will discover the difference he can make in a dirty world between right and wrong.
Set five years before the events of A New Hope, it will also feature Bail Organa and Mon Mothma.
It sounds promising, as a concept, but this is Disney+ and Lucasfilm and they have hurt us before. A murky, dirty espionage tale set in the Star Wars universe at a time when morals may be a bit… flexible, has potential. What we will probably get will be more of the same from Lucasfilm. Safe, unambitious, and by now a little repetitive. Where are the visionaries at that company? Although Rogue One was the closest we got to anything genuinely good since Disney took over, so maybe they get the benefit of the doubt until it lands?
Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller also star.
Tony Gilroy is the creator and showrunner. He will executive produce alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Sanne Wohlenberg, Diego Luna, and Michelle Rejwan.
The first season of Andor will consist of twelve episodes and a second has already been ordered to shoot in the Autumn for a 2023 release date.
