Olympia Dukakis, know for movies Moonstruck, Steel Magnolias, Look Who’s Talking, and Working Girl, has passed away.

The sad news was announced by her brother, Apollo Dukakis, on Facebook :

“My beloved sister…passed away this morning in New York City. After many months of failing health she is finally at peace.”

She won an Oscar for her performance in Moonstruck, starring alongside Cher and Nicholas Cage.

Olympia was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and wanted to be an actress most of her life. She studied physical therapy in Boston University, but later switched to studying acting instead.

She moved to New York and married actor Louis Zorich. Work for actors was scarce, so she did work as a bartender and waitress for a time.

Her and Louis had three children, Christina, Peter and Stefan.  Louis has recently passed away in 2018 at the age of 93.

There is a fitting line from her award winning performance in Moonstruck :

“I just want you to know no matter what you do, you’re gonna die, just like everybody else.”

Sad news and thoughts are with her family and friends. RIP Olympia.
