Steven Spielberg has had a lot to say about streaming in the past. He was critical of its impact on cinema. He once declared, pointedly, that:

“We love cinema!”

This led to an equally pointed response from Netflix via social media:

Whatever was said behind the scenes has clearly had an effect as news from The Hollywood Reporter says Amblin Partners has signed a deal with Netflix. Amblin previously worked with Netflix on The Trial of the Chicago 7 but this deal is next level. Open slate with no restrictions on budget as the deep pockets of the streamers makes themselves felt in the industry.

Amblin will produce multiple films for Netflix each year and this deal will remain apart from their long-time deal with Universal which covers material for theatrical release. Spielberg himself has underlined his about-face with a statement:

“This new avenue for our films, alongside the stories we continue to tell with our longtime family at Universal and our other partners, will be incredibly fulfilling for me personally since we get to embark on it together.”

Spielberg himself will soon shoot a semi-autobiographical feature starring Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Michelle Williams this summer. That could be a streaming candidate under this deal.

The untitled film is loosely based on Spielberg’s childhood growing up as a movie-loving kid in Arizona. At age 12, Spielberg made his first home movie, which was about a train wreck involving his toy trains. He then moves up to 8mm adventure films.

Principal photography on the picture begins in July 2021 near Los Angeles, with a release planned for 2022. Spielberg co-wrote the script himself alongside Tony Kushner, who worked with Spielberg on Munich and Lincoln.

Later this year his musical West Side Story will also be released to theaters.

Other movies on the Amblin slate include The Good House with Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver and Distant, a sci-fi starring Anthony Ramos and Naomie Scott. They are also finally getting moving on Dracula tale Last Voyage of the Demeter which will shoot this summer in Europe.
