The long-awaited fourth instalment of The Expendables franchise is finally moving forward, although moving in a slightly different direction.

Franchise star Sylvester Stallone confirms the movie will now be a spin-off titled The Expendables: A Christmas Story focusing on Jason Statham’s character Lee Christmas.

The project was first teased in January 2020, with Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code, World of Warcraft) initially signed on as a director, before being replaced by DJ Caruso (The Shield, Smallville).

A couple of weeks ago, Stallone posted an image of a golden skull ring with purple stone eyes, which we can only assume is the new good luck charm of his character, Barney Ross.

The caption to the image reads:

“Just finished the designing [sic] the new ring for EXPENDABLE 4 It’s a little heavy, but it’ll definitely put some muscles on your fingertips.”

Stallone will play a much smaller role in the upcoming spinoff, but “his presence will be felt throughout the film.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tony Jaa are attached to the project, however, neither star has officially signed on as the project is still in the early stages of development.

Another original member of The Expendables will not be returning for the 4th instalment. Terry Crews, who starred in all three previous films has been dropped from The Expendables 4 by producer Avi Lerner.

Jean-Claude Van Damme has expressed interest in returning as the brother of his villain character from The Expendables 2.

Other names thrown into the mix by media speculation include Robert Downey Jr., Liam Neeson, Dave Bautista, and even Clint Eastwood.
