Oscar-winner J. K. Simmons played the role of Commissioner James Gordon in Justice League, in a single scene. The role was expanded in Zack Snyder’s cut of the movie, but not by much. Simmons always said he liked the role and hoped to play again. Now he is getting his chance.
Simmons will return in the upcoming Batgirl for HBO Max. Leslie Grace (In the Heights) will play the title role for Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The script is by Christina Hodson. A 2022 release is expected.
But that is not all in the world of the DCEU and former Snyder-verse happenings. David Ayer, director of the first Suicide Squad movie, is most definitely not keeping his mouth shut any longer. His movie was famously edited out from underneath him.
Highly interesting, promising teasers and trailers for Suicide Squad came to nothing as an Oscar winner in the role of the Joker was wasted. It has been known for years that Ayer wasn’t happy with the way things turned out.
Now, as James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is getting absolute raves from fans in previews and professional critics alike, Ayer is out of the blocks to tell anyone who will listen what actually happened.
Despite a solid box-office, the movie was caught up in the Warner Bros. panic after Batman Vs. Superman got terrible reviews. In a knee-jerk reaction, they took over the edit and produced an absolute disaster of a movie.
Ayer has claimed that his cut, unlike Snyder’s Justice League, does not require a single re-shoot. It’s ready, finished, and was completed. It is in the can and they just need to release it. Today he posted a lengthy response to a Twitter poster sounding like he is losing enthusiasm for maintaining his push to release his cut:
“I never told my side of the story and never will… I’m old school like that. So I kept my mouth shut and took the tsunami of sometimes shocking personal criticism.
I put my life into Suicide Squad. I made something amazing. My cut is intricate and emotional journey with some bad people who are s–t on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul).
The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again. And my cut is not the ten-week director’s cut – it’s a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the incredible work by John Gilroy.
It’s all Steven Price’s brilliant score, with not a single radio song in the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid third-act resolution. A handful of people have seen it.”
The director also added that he is ‘so proud’ of Gunn and despite what happened he still stands in full support of the studio:
“I’m so proud of James and excited for the success that’s coming. I support WB and am thrilled the franchise is getting the legs it needs. I’m rooting for everyone, the cast, the crew. Every movie is a miracle. And James’ brilliant work will be the miracles of miracles.”
Come on Warner Bros. Look at how many eyeballs watched the Snyder Cut on HBO Max. We all know you were embarrassed into releasing that by your parent company. Why don’t you just get out in front of this and #ReleaseTheAyerCut. Do it!!
