Shazam, AKA Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be here before the end of the year. Along with Aquaman, the first movie served as something of a counter to the relentlessly grim tone of the DCEU that far. It’s family friendly superhero story, told with plenty of laughs, was easy to like.
Now director David F. Sandberg is bringing the whole crew back once again. Written Henry Gayden, the sequel will unbelievably be the thirteenth movie in the DCEU by the time it hits. The sequel was announced just a week after Shazam! was released in 2019.
Now a featurette and teaser has been released in time for Comic-Con.
Principal photography began on May 26, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia with Gyula Pados serving as cinematographer. Production on the film was delayed from an initial mid-2020 start due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The release date has been all over the place. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now scheduled to be released on December 21, 2022. It was originally set for release on April 1, 2022, then delayed to November 4, 2022, and then again to June 2, 2023 due to COVID-19.
It was then moved up to December 16, 2022, since it was ready for release sooner than other DC films delayed by the pandemic. That date was previously given to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom which has also been delayed.
The release date was pushed back five days to December 21 in April 2022. All this could be completely academic as Shazam! 2 will be available to stream on HBO Max 45 days later.
The film will star Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Djimon Hounsou, Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren, and Lucy Liu.
The last movie included a cameo from Henry Cavill’s Superman, played by a body double. Shazam’s nemesis, Black Adam, of course gets his own movie this autumn.
