A headline I never thought I would write.

The Lighthouse is already one of the year’s most acclaimed movies.  Robert Egbert, director of The Witch, has crafted a Lovecraft like tale that is drawing great reviews.

Part of the acclaim comes from the performance he was able to get from his leads.  This is thought to be at least partially due to the gruelling production.  For a 34-day shoot on the southern coast of Nova Scotia, battered by wind and sea, the crew were as isolated as the characters.

Stories abound.  From near fistfights to mud eating.  For one sequence Robert Pattinson was required to get so drunk on set that he vomited, passed out and peed his pants.

For production design, Eggers meanwhile studied shark genitals in detail.  This was to create an accurate vagina for a sea creature in the film.

Basically, it sounds like everyone went a little crazy.

Eggers spoke to The Daily Beast about future Batman’s first scene – having a massive wank:

“On day one we shot Rob masturbating in the shed – it’s the very first thing we shot – and Rob really, really went for it and you know, it was inspiring.”

Pattinson spoke with The New York Times about the same scene:

“Well, my first shot was this ferocious masturbation scene. It’s always nice to do something massive for your opening shot, and I went really massive on the first take.

It was a 180 from everything we’d done in rehearsal, and I could see Robert [Eggers] a little in shock afterward. But I was like, ‘Ok, cool, I didn’t get told to stop, so I’ll keep going in that direction.’ As soon as I’d done that, it was like the road started getting paved.”

Pattinson and Willem Dafoe star in the film as lighthouse keepers on a remote island in the 1890s New England, trying to keep their sanity.

The movie has a limited release via A24 starting October 18th.
