Now we know a lot more about The Flash. We saw a lot more in the recently released trailer, and we know from the recently released synopsis that Barry Allen will be responsible for accidentally kicking off an alternate universe. That can happen. This universe doesn’t have the superheroes we know and love to defend the Earth when this universes version of General Zod comes calling.
It turns out that Michael Shannon is as surprised as anyone to be returning to the role. In an iunterview with Looper he was open and honest about it, and about his view of superhero movies in general:
“I was a little confused. I said, ‘As memory serves me, I think I died in Man of Steel. Are they sure they got the right guy?’ But then they explained to me the whole multiverse phenomenon, which I was a little behind the times on that. I can’t say that I’m a huge consumer of this genre of films – not that I have anything against them.
If I’m going to watch a movie, the odds are it’s not going to be one of those, but I sure love making them. I loved making Man of Steel, and I love working with Zack [Snyder], and I felt like it was actually, in a way, a fairly important film.
It was nice to revisit the character. I wasn’t there for a terribly long time. I was in and out in a couple of weeks, so it was a nice way to spend a bit of my summer in England. Andy [Muschietti] is a lovely guy and a great artist, visually, and I had a blast.”
Shannon has also said that his character is different from the Zod of the first movie, but doesn’t elaborate other than saying the audience won’t be spending too much time with him.
Ben Affleck also returns as the Snyder-verse Batman, and the movie is rumored to draw a line under that universe and clear the decks for the new Gunn and Safran DCU.
