“I Heard You Paint Houses”

The Irishman is arguably one of the best films of 2019. The Netflix epic starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, and Harvey Keitel also featured some ground-breaking and expensive digital effects.

Netflix has just released a new video showing-off said effects. The 13-minute featurette has just been uploaded onto their YouTube channel and dives deep into the technology used in Martin Scorsese’s mob movie.

ILM’s FX guru Pablo Helman demonstrates the challenges the studio faced in delivering the technique, especially in the way the actors didn’t have distracting markers on their face whilst filming. Instead a new software called Flux, a special multi-camera set-up and footage of the actors in older movies was all combined to deliver the mostly impressive results. Here’s the feature –

The Irishman is now streaming on Netflix and was nominated in multiple categories at this weekend’s big Golden Globes, but it didn’t win a goddamned thing.
