In this age of total Marvel domination at the movies it is hard to imagine a time when they, and superhero movies in general, were on their ass.

Batman And Robin had flogged a dead horse to what felt like extinction.  Green shoots started to appear in Blade in 1998, X-Men in 2000.  However it was Sam Raimi’s adaption of Spider-Man in 2002 that really pushed comic book movies back to the top of a movie exec to-do list.

Of course, the big brains in Hollywood then pushed the genre back to the brink again through questionable quality control and selling rights to each other without a care in the world.  Idiots gonna idiot!

Director Sam Raimi is therefore practically the modern father of this genre.  So it is with a degree of excitement that we hear news that he may return to Marvel.

He is apparently in talks to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Scott Derrickson, who helmed the original, left over “creative differences” but will remain on board as an executive producer.

Benedict Cumberbatch returns for what some are saying is Marvel Studios’ first movie with hints of horror.  That is Raimi’s sweet spot.  The movie is also said to be connected to WandaVision on Disney+.

Shooting starts in May this year for a May 2021 release.
