No stranger to pirates, or the Caribbean, from a previous turn in the Johnny Depp franchise, Zoe Saldana is to return for The Bluff on Netflix. They recently won a bidding war over the rights.
Less swashbuckling, more “visceral action and historical fiction” according to the blurb. On the Cayman Islands in the 1800s a Caribbean woman called Ercell (Saldana) has a secret past that is revealed when her island is invaded by pirates. She must fight against their atrocities and hold her community together.
Frank E. Flowers is directing and Joe Ballarini will pen the script for The Bluff. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo join the producing crew along with Mariel and Cisely Saldana, keeping it in the family.
Pirates Of The Caribbean will itself be back in some form, with Chernobyl writers locked in one version, Margot Robbie locked for another. Neither of those have made any significant progress as Disney comes to realize that Johnny Depp basically was that franchise. Awkward!
Zoe Saldana has been extremely busy with four Avatar sequels in the works (yes those are still a thing), a Untitled David O. Russell Project that’s apparently filming now and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 around the bend.
