The Russo’s can do no wrong. Off the back of a one-two-three punch of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame they then delivered Netflix’s most-watched movie upon its release – Extraction. Captain America: Civil War only committed the offense of not being as good as The Winter Soldier. Very little is.

So Joe and Anthony moved on from Marvel with the praise of fans and the thanks of Disney shareholders ringing in their ears.

Then Cherry happened. The reviews praised lead Tom Holland but were not kind to the Russo’s direction or formulaic story at all.

So it’s something of a relief to see them returning to their more straightforward action roots for The Gray Man. The big-budget, globe-trotting assassin action-thriller is being made for Netflix and has begun filming.

Originally set to be directed by James Gray and potentially star Brad Pitt, it’s now a Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans vehicle.

Gosling is Court Gentry, a former CIA operative and now a highly paid assassin known in law enforcement circles only as the Gray Man. Evans is Lloyd Hansen, Gentry’s former colleague who is now hunting him.

Rege-Jean Page, Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, Jessica Henwick, and Alfre Woodard round out a pretty heavyweight cast. The movie is based on a book by Tom Clancy’s replacement, Mark Greaney and is being viewed by Netflix as the potential start of a franchise. The movie will screen on Netflix sometime in 2022.
