Fresh from the success of his episode The Mandalorian, Robert Rodriguez has spoken of his hope for a follow-up to Alita: Battle Angel. In February 2019 the movie made $405 million at the box office even on the back of a 61% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The sci-fi adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga series has developed a loyal fanbase and both the movie and the source material had sequel potential in their stories. During a recent interview with Forbes, Rodriguez was asked about a second movie:
“I think anything is possible. Disney bought Fox, and they have Disney+, so that is worth the conversation. I know other people would love to see another, and I would love to do another one.”
Rodriguez went on to say that the huge success of Disney+ has:
“…opened up many opportunities such as sequels…”
He pointed to the large built-in audience and ease of consumption for platforms such as Disney+. With the constant need for fresh content Alita: Battle Angel could prove to have a life after the theaters on the platform.
Rodriguez has done a lot for streamers lately. Alongside co-writing, producing and directing Red 11 for Tubi and Chapter 14: The Tragedy of The Mandalorian, he also had We Can Be Heroes landing on Netflix on Christmas Day.
