Reported in The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Rock has apparently declined an invitation to host the Oscars for a third time. The 2022 Academy Awards were infamous for an incident where, after a joke aimed at his wife, actor Will Smith took to the stage and delivered a slap to host Rock. At the time many felt it was a staged incident. It soon became clear that it was not.
The comedian reportedly broke the news during his Sunday night stand-up show in Phoenix, and it was swiftly picked up by The Arizona Republic and then The Hollywood Reporter. According to reports Rock compared accepting the hosting gig again to returning to the scene of a crime and likened it to the O.J. Simpson murder trial.
Rock has repeatedly refused to go into too much detail about the incident, simply dropping in one or two lines about it into shows then swiftly moving on. This time a fan yelled at him to “talk about it” and Rock responded. He said:
“He’s bigger than me. The state of Nevada would not sanction a fight between me and Will Smith.”
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has declined to comment, as they always do as they have absolutely no idea how to run PR or shape an opinion without a committee.
Will Smith remains the potential winner in all this, as he is banned from sitting through the annual smug drudgery that is the Academy Awards for another ten years, which sounds like getting parole. If only the same were true of us, but its the cross we have to bear to report on if for you guys.
