I will start by saying two things. Firstly, I don’t really remember the original Munsters. I know of it, and I do remember watching some of it as a kid, but that’s about it. I’m not a fan. I can take it or leave it.

The Munsters

Secondly, I think Rob Zombie is a hack, I have never held back from saying that. I have seen a few of his movies and they are just awful. I get the impression that he thinks boobs, swearing, and blood make a good movie.

As The Munsters isn’t going to be R-rated I did wonder how he would cope. The answer is badly. I did go into this movie with an open mind, but I just didn’t like it.

There is a story in there but honestly, it doesn’t matter, as the movie is more like a series of sketches pasted together with a story jammed in there somewhere. It’s supposed to be a prequel to the main series where Herman is created, falls in love with Lily, and then moves to the suburbs.

It takes an hour and forty-five minutes to get there, which is way too long. The entire movie is Adam West Batman camp, including odd camera angles, acting you would see in a school play and stupid sound effects after the “jokes”.

Munsters

I have to use the term “jokes”, since they are mostly dad jokes you have heard a million times before and didn’t find funny the first time.

“My friend died drinking a gallon of polish, it was a horrible end, but a lovely finish.”

Yep, that is one of the jokes that Herman tells at one point. This movie is aimed at kids under 8 years old as a Halloween movie, but anyone older than that will not like it unless you like camp acting, zero story, and jokes that would make any dad cringe.

I know that Zombie did this as a pet project as he loves the The Munsters, but I don’t know what he was trying to do. I can’t see anyone watching this and then wanting to watch the original series. This just seems like a vanity project for him.

The overall quality is so camp, I have seen better-produced home movies, shot on a camcorder, with computer graphics made on an old Sinclair ZX-81. The colours are just awful and overbearing on the whole thing. This might have actually looked better in black and white.

I don’t know, you might like this if you like the original. To me The Munsters was embarrassing for everyone involved. It was just bad. I will never suffer through this again in my life. I can’t give it any stars as it was just a waste of my time. It was supposed to be a comedy and I didn’t laugh once.
