Red Sonja has been trapped in development for a long, long time. It seemed that Bryan Singer’s personal problems may have doomed the project to never see the light of day. He was then removed. There is still life though, and today there is news that screenwriter Tasha Huo has come on board at Millennium.

Transparent creator Joey Soloway took over as director in 2019 after Singer was dropped. Soloway dropped a typically over blown Hollywood statement:

“There could not be a greater moment in our world for Red Sonja’s ways of wielding power and her connection with nature and our planet. She is an ancient heroine with an epic calling, and translating that to the screen is a dream come true for me as a filmmaker. I can’t wait to collaborate with Tasha on this vision.”

Casting on the film is imminent and Huo will write alongside showrunning and executive producing the upcoming animated Tomb Raider series over at Netflix.

The 1985 version starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger was a notorious box office bomb, but has since garnered cult status.  I always thought Olivia Munn would make a good Red Sonja and now that Bryan Singer is no longer involved maybe they can make it work.
