Netflix had a big hit late last year with Red Notice. The movie may have been impacted by COVID during production, but it got A LOT of views. The team-up of Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, three massive stars, proved irresistible to a lot of viewers. It was fun. Disposable, but a perfectly entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.

The streaming giant certainly isn’t going to stop there, after it became their most expensive production to date. According to Deadline, the streamer is reportedly in the early stages of spinning up a back-to-back shoot of two sequels. Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds are expected to return.

According to the reports, the plan is to expand both the world and the cast to move up to an ensemble piece. So expect some other big names to come on board. An art heist version of Oceans Eleven could well be the aim.

Writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber, a long-time Johnson collaborator, has already started on the scripts for the Red Notice sequels, and production is penciled in for early 2023. Our resident padre here at the Outpost, the most reverend Reverend, is rather excited about all of this.

This isn’t so much of a big bet for Netflix. They have the data, better data than just about any other movie studio. Due to Red Notice having a $200 million production budget, Netflix’s global film chief Scott Stuber set the performance bar:

“…big-budget tentpole films [need] to draw an audience of more than 70 million viewers within the first 28 days of availability…”

The New York Observer estimated Red Notice would need to total around 200 million hours (about 83 million household viewers) to be deemed a success. It exceeded this target in fewer than 28 days. With those sorts of numbers, a sequel was always going to happen.

Beau Flynn will return to produce alongside Thurber, Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia, and Dany Garcia.
