Proving that the MCU remains pretty critic-proof right now, Eternals remains top of the box office for a second week. It is not all sunshine and rainbows for the movie though. It is the first MCU entry to be officially classed as Rotten on the review site Rotten Tomatoes since the MCU was started all those years ago back in 2008.

Eternals

As of this morning, 47% of the 357 critics’ reviews gave it a positive score. Interestingly the audience score has recovered to 80% following some well-publicized accusations of review bombing. You can see what we had to say about it here.

Marvel Studios rarely comment on reviews but executive Victoria Alonso made reference to these negative reviews while appearing at the Outfest Legacy Awards. She was there to accept the Visionary Award for LGBTQ equality in film. She had this to say:

“We have tried to stir it up and sometimes the critics are not with us. That’s OK. That’s OK. We thank you for being a critic. We thank you for writing about us. And the fans will decide. Diversity and inclusion is not a political game for us. It is 100 percent a responsibility because you don’t get to have the global success that we have given the Walt Disney Company without the support of people around the world of every kind of human there is.”

The MCU is clearly in transition and there are a lot of new stories coming. Eternals lays a huge amount of groundwork for future events. One of these is a voice cameo we talk about here. There is also another.

Eternals Spoiler Warning

If you have not seen Eternals then back away now. If you have then you know another character appears in the now-standard MCU post-credits stinger.

One Direction singer and other-times actor Harry Styles (Dunkirk) makes his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Eros AKA Starfox of Mystery Planet. He is the brother of Thanos and the Royal Prince of Titan.

The widely derided CGI character Pip the Troll – voiced by Patton Oswalt – announces him and he arrives to tell some of the Eternals that their friends are in trouble and he can help to find them. This is supposed to pave the way for an Eternals sequel.

He had this to say of his appearance in the MCU in an interview with Daze:

“I’m only in right at the very end, but who didn’t grow up wanting to be a superhero, you know? It was a great experience, and I’m so grateful to have gotten to work with Chloé.”

According to a previous interview by Zhao with Deadline, she personally chose Styles for the role of Starfox:

“Harry as Eros was very much a package deal for me. I pitched the idea of Pip the Troll and Eros to Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president] a while back. I love the idea of exploring an Eternal who is beyond Titan and who may have influenced Thanos throughout the years the same way [the] Eternals influenced us, earthlings. It wasn’t like I suggested Eros, and let’s go find actors.

I kept tabs on Harry since Dunkirk, I thought he was very interesting. After meeting him, I realized he is that character—the same way I cast the rest of my cast. There’s so much of Eros in him. For me, if he says yes and Kevin says yes then it’s a go. And I’m very happy they both did.”
