It certainly looks that way. Even Terry Pratchett’s own daughter said this show shares no DNA with her fathers work.
Now BBC America have released the first trailer and clips from the upcoming Pratchett adaption The Watch. So we can see that it appears to be an adaption of the first novel featuring the City Watch – Guards Guards. We can also see a lot of the usual suspects present, such as a gender swapped Patrician. The whole show also seems to have been moved from the traditional Discworld fantasy / medieval setting to some kind of Doctor Who production designed steampunk appropriation.
Budget reasons, no doubt. Easier and cheaper than creating a medieval city and having everyone in period costumes and armor.
It’s coming to screens on January 3rd and is said to be a police procedural following a group of misfit cops, led Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), in the capital city of the Discworld, Ankh-Morpork. Fantasy and comedy combine as the show:
“…pits trolls, werewolves, wizards and other improbable heroes against an evil plot to resurrect a great dragon which would lead to the destruction of life as they know it…”
So the central idea of the first book seems to be at it’s core, at least. The online Pratchett community have already reacted and decided this does not look or feel like their Discworld. However it looks as if the humor and sly digs at everything in modern life through the fantasy lens might remain.
Simon Allen produces the series which also stars Wendell Pierce (Jack Ryan, The Wire) as Death.
