Not long now until Jodie Whittaker bows out of Doctor Who, taking with her showrunner Chris Chibnall and composer Segun Akinola. Original 2005 reboot showrunner Russell T. Davies returns, with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the famous role as the 14th incarnation of the Doctor.
The BBC has now confirmed an October 23rd screen date and has released the official trailer for The Power of the Doctor, Whittaker’s final episode and a special to celebrate 100 years of the BBC.
It is a 90-minute special and will feature guest stars and returning characters. Previous companions Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Ace (Sophie Aldred) are confirmed. Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), Vinder (Jacob Anderson) and Sacha Dhawan’s the Master all return. It wouldn’t be a send-off without the Daleks and Cybermen making an appearance in amongst a final showdown for this incarnation of the Doctor with her nemesis, The Master.
There are rumors of inspiration being taken from the Holmes and Moriarty relationship in Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes books to inform the journey the Master and the Doctor will go on. One thing we do know is that the Doctor will regenerate at the end of the episode, as it traditional.
New Doctor, Gatwa, is best known for his critically acclaimed performance in Sex Education as Eric Effiong, for which he was awarded Best Actor Award at the Scottish BAFTA’s in 2020 as well as numerous nominations including Best Male Performance in a comedy programme at this year’s BAFTA’s. What kind of Doctor Who he will be shall be revealed when his new series starts to roll.
