Another Marvel series is coming to Disney+, Wonder Man. According to reports Watchmen and Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in talks to star as the lead, Simon Williams.
Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Community ) is serving as head writer for the show while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will executive produce and direct some episodes.
In the comics, Simon Williams is the son of rich industrialist Sanford Williams. He inherits Williams Innovations, munitions manufacturers, after his fathers death. The company suffers in competition with Stark Industries.
On the advice of his brother Eric, Simon tried to embezzle funds from his company but is caught and sent to jail. He blames Stark and is bailed by Enchantress on behalf of Baron Zemo to infiltrate the Avengers.
The desperate Williams agrees and is transformed into an ion-powered being with superhuman strength and durability.
He joins the Avengers, with instructions to betray them at a critical moment, with his loyalty guaranteed by the need for periodic doses of a serum that only Zemo has. The plan fails when Wonder Man decides to save the Avengers and aid them against Zemo, apparently at the cost of his own life.
As this is comics, and nobody is ever really gone, he returns to be a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers with a day job as an actor and stuntman.
According to the rumors, Ben Kingsley returns to reprise his Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi role of actor Trevor Slattery.
There is something different about Abdul-Mateen II from the character in the comics. We can’t quite put our finger on it.
