They are now deep into filming on the Mad Max prequel Furiosa. George Miller is using the same locations from his previous Mad Max entries across New South Wales. Anya Taylor-Joy will play a younger version of Charlize Theron’s character from Mad Max: Fury Road. Chris Hemsworth was in the cast in a role that was secret, potentially until now.
Collider have published a synopsis that details the high level plot:
“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe.
While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”
Hemsworth is rumored to be the villain, so he could be playing either biker tribe leader Dementus or a young Immortan Joe, before he became Hugh Keays-Byrne who used to be Toecutter from the first movie. Clear? Good.
The cast is completed by Tom Burke and Angus Sampson. Burke replaced Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who exited due scheduling issues.
The original series followed the adventures of Max Rockatansky, a police officer in a future Australia which is experiencing societal collapse due to war and critical resource shortages. When his wife and child are murdered by a vicious biker gang, Max kills them in revenge and becomes a drifting loner in the Wasteland. As Australia devolves further into barbarity, Max finds himself helping pockets of civilisation, initially for his own self-interest, but his motives always drift into more altruistic ones.
It began in 1979 with Mad Max, and was followed by three sequels: Mad Max 2 (1981, released in the United States as The Road Warrior), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015); Miller directed or co-directed all four films. Mel Gibson starred in the first three films and Tom Hardy took over as Max in the fourth film.
Furiosa is currently targeting a May 24th 2024 release.
