Firstly, don’t get too worried, this is only talk about a remake of John Hughes classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles. In this day and age, reboots and remakes tend to ruin everything, no one should be touching a movie like this.

Secondly, in the”Don’t even go there” category, the remake would like to be done by Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz.

Barrymore now hosts a chat show and her friend, Adam Sandler, was on and they got talking about Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and working alongside Diaz again. Barrymore said:

“Her and I did discuss remaking ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,’ and then I was like, ‘Well you know Adam and I talk about that. Well, I also want to play John Candy.”

Sandler replied:

“You could do a good Candy. You know who could do Candy the best? [Chris] Farley. He would walk around the office and say lines from ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.’”

John Candy was a great comic, with a sense of timing, intelligence, and brilliance. Drew Barrymore is none of those things. The combination of Steve Martin, Candy, and Hughes’s writing and directing, was lightning in a bottle, you couldn’t replicate it again.

Diaz is now “informally retired” which means “I can’t be arsed, but if a big enough pay cheque comes along, I’m back”. Apparently, the “big enough pay cheque” was for Back in Action, staring next to Jamie Foxx.

I will reiterate this again, but this was just talk about remaking Planes, Trains, and Autombiles. However, this is Hollywood, where someone is always willing to pay for a bad idea, so who knows when this will be out.
