At the Toronto Film Festival the new Batman, Robert Pattinson, will be doing the rounds. His black-and-white period horror, The Lighthouse is drawing attention and getting good reviews.
After a great response to the movie, Pattinson had to leave early and get on a plane. The reason? He was due his first fitting in the new Batman suit for director Matt Reeves.
In an interview with Variety, the new star of The Batman spoke about how the new suit felt, and the emotional impact the new role has already made:
“It’s maybe the craziest thing I’ve ever done in terms of movie stuff. I put it on. I remember saying to Matt, ‘It does feel quite transformative!’ He was like, ‘I would hope it does!!! You’re literally in the Batsuit.’
You do feel very powerful immediately, and it’s pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating. You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs.’
You’re trying to think of the way to balance, how to bring something new to it and not want to scare people off, and work in the confines of the costume.”
He went on to speak about the online backlash he received after he was cast in the role:
“To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting. It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.”
Pattinson is currently working on Christopher Nolan’s new movie Tenet, so he had a chance to speak to a former Batman director, and apparently, the talk included the Batsuit.
The Lighthouse opens in theaters on October 18th. The Batman is pencilled in for a June 2021 release date.
