Movie Will Premiere On Amazon Prime
Paramount has announced that Eddie Murphy’s Coming 2 America will bypass theaters and premiere on Amazon Prime.
Amazon acquired the film after it became evident that a vast majority of theaters would remain closed for the foreseeable future. It’s reported that the acquisition cost Jeff Bezos upwards of $125 million.
The sequel will see the newly crowned King Akeem (Murphy) and his trusted advisor Semmi (Hall) heading back to Queens, New York from their royal country of Zamunda after Akeem learns that he has a long-lost son in the city of Queens. Murphy will also reprise his various characters for the barbershop crew.
Many original cast will also return, including King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), Queen Lisa (Shari Headley), Cleo McDowell (John Amos), Maurice (Louie Anderson) and the barbershop crew.
New characters will be played by Wesley Snipes, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha and Teyana Taylor.
It will be Murphy’s first film role since Dolemite Is My Name in 2019, although in December, he made his return to SNL, which earned the comedian his first-ever Emmy award.
Craig Brewer (Dolemite Is My Name) directs Coming 2 America. Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, and David Sheffield wrote the screenplay based on a story by Blaustein, Sheffield, and Justin Kanew that, in turn, is based on characters created by Murphy for the original film.
The streamer has given Coming 2 America a worldwide premiere date of March 5th, 2021.
