We’ll just put a happy little article up here. Following on from the release of the teaser last month, IFC Films has released the full trailer for Paint. In Paint, Owen Wilson definitely does not play Bob Ross. Nope. Nosiree. He absolutely is not Bob Ross in any way.
Wilson stars as not-Bob Ross, a painter called Carl Nargle. He is the #1 public television art icon. Just like Bob Ross, only from Vermont instead of Florida. Just as he is at the very top of his game, everything he holds dear is challenged by a younger artist who steals everything he holds dear.
Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renee, Lusia Strus, Stephen Root, and Lucy Freyer co-star. Brit McAdams wrote the script and directs. Paint will hit theaters on April 28th. Here is the trailer.
Real-life Bob Ross had a backstory that could have come straight from a movie. In his adolescence as a trainee Floridaman, Ross cared for injured animals including armadillos, snakes, alligators, and squirrels.
He eventually joined the Air Force and had a 20-year career. It was here that he developed an interest in painting after attending an art class at the Anchorage U.S.O. club. He found himself frequently at odds with many of his painting instructors, who were more interested in abstract painting. Ross said:
“They’d tell you what makes a tree, but they wouldn’t tell you how to paint a tree.”
Ross was working as a part-time bartender when he discovered a TV show called The Magic of Oil Painting, hosted by German painter Bill Alexander and using the 16th-century painting style called “alla prima” – Italian for ‘first attempt. Ross studied and mastered the technique, first using it to paint Alaskan landscapes on novelty gold-mining pans, before eventually going on to create his show.
