It has been playing all weekend in front of Avatar: The Way of Water, and now Universal have released the full trailer for Oppenheimer online.
Christopher Nolan’s biopic is based on Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus. Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb.
The cast is rounded out by Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty, Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director General Leslie Groves Jr., Robert Downey, Jr as U.S. Atomic Energy Commission founder Lewis Strauss, Benny Safdie as theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Josh Hartnett as nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence, and Florence Pugh as psychiatrist Jean Tatlock.
Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek, Michael Angarano, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Jason Clarke, Jack Quaid, Josh Peck, Alex Wolff, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Modine, and Gary Oldman make up the rest of the roster. Wow! That is some cast.
Oppenheimer will be released in cinemas on July 21st next year with versions available in 70mm, 35mm and IMAX.
Oppenheimer is Nolan’s first film not to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures domestically or internationally since Memento in 2000.
His split with Warner Bros. came after they announced plans to give their 2021 films simultaneous releases in theaters and on HBO Max due to COVID-19. Nolan expressed his disbelief with the decision. He then chose Universal Pictures as the distributor.
Rather than using computer-generated graphics environments, Nolan has used real explosives to recreate the Trinity nuclear test. The $100 million budget is low for Nolan recently, but high for a historical biopic. July next year is pretty packed, with Barbie, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning and The Marvels all opening, and Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny still around after a June debut.
