I haven’t heard many rumblings about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at all, but to be fair, I haven’t been looking for news either. In fact, I think the last news I did hear about this movie was that Idris Elba going to be Knuckles.
Everyone’s favorite red echidna, Knuckles will be making his big screen debut in the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel. In the video games, he was first introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and wasn’t on the best of terms with Sonic himself. He was actually more of a mid-level antagonist, duped into fighting Sonic by Dr. Robotnik. Most likely the movie will follow the same path for the character.
When I first heard about Elba casted as Knuckles, I thought it was an interesting choice. Sure he’s British and all, but anyone that’s watched The Wire knows he can do a perfectly good American accent. Who knows, maybe Knuckles will sound a little British. What we do know, is he won’t be sexy.
During a recent interview, when asked about his history of debonair English characters and how they might fit into his performance as Knuckles, Elba said that the echidna would not be sexy.
“Honestly, I cannot say. Contractually, I cannot say anything. But I wouldn’t say he was sexy. I don’t think I’m going for that. That’s for sure.”
Lets be honest here, does anyone think that Elba can actually turn off the sexy? The guy is drenched in it, but hey, good to hear that he doesn’t have any plans to make Knuckles a furry.
Everyone has been pretty tight lipped about the plot for Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but even more so about Tails, the two-tailed fox buddy of Sonic. He’s introduced in the end credits of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and was voiced by longtime video game voice actress Colleen Villard. She’s been the voice of Tails since 2014. No one knows if they will keep her on for the role or bring in another actor.
As it stands right now, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled to release on April 8, 2022.
