It seems that Margot Robbie may be done playing Harley Quinn, at least for the foreseeable future. Robbie has played Harley in 2016s Suicide Squad, the 2020 spin-off Birds of Prey, and in 2021 in the soon-to-be-released The Suicide Squad.
In an interview with EW in June, talking about The Suicide Squad, Robbie said :
“It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds… and filming this, so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley because she’s exhausting, I don’t know when we’re next going to see her. I’m just as intrigued as everyone else is.”
During the interview, Robbie said she was shocked that the character was killed off in Zack Snyder’s Justice League when Batfleck said that Harley Quinn died in his arms. She said that each DC movie is ‘kind of its own thing’ compared to the Marvel movies :
“It’s not like Marvel where everything is more obviously linked in a more linear way. It feels like there’s so many adjacent stories, worlds, and films happening at the same time, just like there are in the comics, so, yeah, I didn’t know that, but it doesn’t necessarily change what other people are able to do with this universe, I don’t think.
What one director decides I don’t think dictates what another director might be able to pick up and do with the world and the characters, which is fun. I think that’s an appealing aspect for directors in the DC world, they can make it their own, the way James (Gunn) did.”
She said that each director decides, so maybe somebody should tell that to JJ Abrams, incoming at Warner Bros. to get his paws on DC?
Interesting, the above was said in June, but, when looking up the details on this, on Robbie’s IMDb profile, it has been announced that she is now playing Harley, once more, in a movie called Gotham City Sirens. I guess Harley Quinn is exhausting, but also comes with a juicy paycheque.
Will that actually be the last time she plays her?
