Focus Features has released a new trailer for the upcoming dramatic thriller titled Stillwater, which stars Matt Damon.


Stillwater stars Damon as Bill Baker, an oil rig worker (known as a roughneck) from Stillwater, Oklahoma, who travels to Marseille, France, to exonerate his daughter Abigail, who has been arrested for a murder she says she didn’t commit.

The crime in question occurred when Abigail took a year off from school at Oklahoma State University to study abroad in Marseille. While there, she meets a woman with whom she has a relationship, and the crime that occurs involves this woman.

The official Stillwater synopsis read:

“An American oil-rig roughneck travels to Marseille, France, to visit his estranged daughter, in prison for a murder she claims she didn’t commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences and a complicated legal system, he soon builds a new life for himself as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate her.”

Stillwater is directed by Spotlight filmmaker Tom McCarthy, from a script he co-wrote with Marcus Hinchey and Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré.

Speaking about Stillwater in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director McCarthy said:

“He’s a guy that’s had a difficult life, he’s struggled, but he sort of tried to make amends and do what’s right, I think, when we meet him.”

Starring alongside Damon is Abigail Breslin as Allison Baker, Camille Cottin as Virginie, Lilou Siauvaud and Deanna Dunagan.


Stillwater was previously scheduled to be released on November 6th, 2020, but to due to the pandemic the film will now be released on July 30th.
