20th Century Studios confirmed the name and cast for the next Planet Of The Apes entry, titled Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, as well as a first look image.
The film, from director Wes Ball (The Maze Runner trilogy), will star Owen Teague (IT) alongside newly announced cast members Freya Allen (Witcher) and Peter Macon (The Orville).
Kingdom will be the fourth Apes movie set in the same “universe” as the three previous films, Rise, Dawn and War which came out between 2011 and 2017. With the previous three all hitting around $500 million at the box office each, 20th Century are obviously expecting big numbers from this and rightfully so.
For me, these three Apes movies are masterpieces, and often overlooked when people discuss best cinematic trilogies. The motion capture technology was groundbreaking and led to Andy Serkis to become very vocal about an Oscar’s snub and their reluctance to regard motion capture as a legitimate form of acting.
Based on a novel by Pierre Boulle, the original Planet of the Apes franchise was started way back 1968, and starred Charlton Heston. It earned an honorary Academy Award for outstanding makeup achievement.
It spawned four sequels and two TV series and Tim Burton directed a 2001 reboot starring Mark Walhberg and Tim Roth that was less well received.
20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell said in a statement:
“Planet Of The Apes is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio’s legacy.
With Kingdom of the Planet Of The Apes we are privileged to continue the series’ tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema, and can’t wait to share Wes’ extraordinary vision for this new chapter with audiences in 2024.”
Kingdom Of The Planet of the Apes is set for release in 2024. Production will begin next month.
