The first warning signs were there when the 2nd trailer hit two weeks ago.
The Gossip Girl with guns feeling with a whiff of misandry in place of the sense of fun and likeable characters of the earlier McG efforts with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore. Now it’s only three weeks away and the tracking is not good news for Charlie’s Angels.
The movie’s first weekend numbers have been revised… the wrong way! Original estimates had a $29m long range forecast. This has nosedived down to just $16m. Potential audiences just aren’t responding to the GenZ third-wave take on the property first made popular in the 1970s on TV.
The show was rebooted on TV in 2011 and was also a flop, with the show being cancelled.
Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska star, with Elizabeth Banks directing, producing and writing as well as featuring.
Banks herself, Djimon Hounsou and Patrick Stewart star as the Bosleys, Charlie Townsend’s assistants, while Sam Claflin and Noah Centineo appear in supporting roles. The final budget was a tight $48m.
The other notable mid-November release, Ford vs. Ferrari, is tracking at double this amount, near $30m. This is bad. Really bad. If a movie featuring men, doing men stuff in a manly way while having penises beats this then it will all be our fault and it will be because of sexist Russian trolls on the internet, or something. The Ghostbusters 2016 defence will be warming up at Sony already.
Wait… Sony again? Jesus Christ Sony, what the hell are you guys doing over there? Oh, actually now we remember reading all the emails and we understand you are all a bit special. Sony Pictures is the Hollywood equivalent of the short bus, with Amy Pascal and crew inside licking the windows. Pretty much as expected then. Carry on.
