A new queen of the galaxy has been cast as Barbarella is set to return. Euphoria and The White Lotus star Sydney Sweeney is attached to a new version of Barbarella for Sony Pictures.
Jane Fonda became famous for playing the 41st-century astronaut and explorer. The movie was based on Jean Claude Forest’s French comic series.
The 1968 movie became a cult hit and in the process also give us the name of a leading force in the 1980s New Romantics movement through the name of the villain Durand Durand. In the movie he was to unleash his Positronic Ray. The band simply unleashed one of the best-selling Bond themes of all time.
Forest originally created the character of Barbarella for serialization in the French V Magazine in spring 1962. This caused a scandal and became known as the first “adult” (erotic) comic book, even though American pornographic comic books known as “Tijuana bibles” had long predated it.
The character was held up as a symbol of the emancipated woman in the era of sexual liberation, and by association with the mid-20th century sexual revolution.
Roger Vadim was hired to direct the original Barbarella after producer Dino De Laurentiis purchased the film rights to the comic series. Vadim attempted to cast several actresses, including Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren, in the title role before choosing Fonda. At the time Fonda was his wife.
The new Barbarella has no writer or director currently attached. Sweeney is expected to secure an executive producer credit.
