The scream queen that helped bring slasher movies back in the mid-90s will no longer be haunted by the ghostface killer. Neve Campbell has turned down the offer to come back for the sixth Scream movie.

Say what you will about the Scream movies, they have been consistent with the characters and the actors that portrayed them for more than two decades. That all seems to be changing now with Campbell out. Either they’ll just write her character out or have someone new play the role of Sidney Prescott. I highly doubt the latter of those options will happen though.

Since 1996, Campbell has established herself as one of the most notable final girls in the slasher sub-genre. It’ll seem a bit empty without her in the sixth Scream movie, but honestly it had to happen eventually. That being said, I didn’t think it would come like this.

Apparently the amount Paramount offered up to return yet again wasn’t enough to keep her in the starring role. This was confirmed by Campbell.

“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film.”

“As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream,”

“I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

The actress said about her turn in the $744 million-plus grossing global franchise:

“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

Campbell is starring in Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer and apparently joining the cast of Peacock‘s Twisted Metal in a recurring role as Raven opposite Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, and Thomas Haden Church.

As for returning cast members for the sixth Scream movie, Courteney Cox has conversely agreed to return again as Gale Weathers. However it’s unknown at this time what she was offered to do so. Also, Hayden Panettiere is said to be returning from Scream 4. There are also a few characters luckily not killed in the fifth movie that will be coming back as well.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready Or Not, VHS) will both return to direct the sixth movie.

Scream 6 is set to be released on March 31, 2023. It will be interesting to see how the movie fares without Campbell in her iconic role.

Also, is it going to be called Scream 6? The last one was just Scream, so shouldn’t this one be Scream 2?
