Netflix has unstoppable cash and the kind of market-dominating position that will cause the regulator to look closely should they ever decide to try and buy one of their rivals. However, right now that doesn’t seem to be part of their plan. They are just happy to be one of the biggest spending content creators on the planet, and able to pay silly money to secure other content. Like sequels to Knives Out.

In one of the biggest deals on streaming history, they have just paid out $450 million to purchase the rights to not one, but two sequels to Knives Out, Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunit.

Johnson will still direct and Daniel Craig is expected to return as Benoit Blanc for both films. Johnson has written both and will remain as producer alongside Ram Bergman.

Knives Out

The original was a big success, pulling in $311 million on a $40 million budget.

Johnson wisely kept licensing rights so it’s his to “sell” enabling him to do very nicely from this deal. Netflix, Apple and Amazon were all bidding.

The sequel will begin shooting on June 28th in the Greek Islands. No word yet on the location for the third movie.
