Teasers, sneak-peaks and featurettes will flow over the next few days as studios show off their wares at Comic-Con and other channels and platforms keep up by releasing unleashing their marketing. Today it is the turn of Disney+ and National Treasure.
Disney has premiered a teaser trailer and an accompanying featurette for the streaming series National Treasure: Edge of History.
This is set in the same universe as the Nic Cage movies. This story will be told from the point of view of Jess Morales, a twenty-year-old DREAMer who, with her “diverse” group of friends, sets off on an adventure to uncover a mystery from her family’s past while searching for a lost Pan-American treasure.
Justin Bartha will return as Riley Poole, Cage’s sidekick from the movies. The news today also confirms that Harvey Keitel will return as Peter Sadusky. What is the betting that we will see a Cage cameo in the closing stages of the series?
Lisette Alexis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Zuri Reed, Lyndon Smith, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, and Jordan Rodrigues all star with Mira Nair directing. The screenplay was written by the writers of the original film, Marianne and Cormac Wibberley.
In the original movie, Cage plays Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian and amateur cryptographer. He was searching for a huge lost treasure accumulated over time, hidden away by American Freemasons during the American Revolutionary War. A coded, unseen map, placed on the back of the Declaration of Independence pointed to the secret location of this “national treasure”.
The movie grossed $350 million on a budget of $100 million. It was followed by a sequel.
