The rumors swirl of Nic Cage returning to the world of National Treasure in a third movie instalment. First, we have the Disney+ series based upon the movie series. It now has a title. National Treasure: Edge of History.
The story will focus on 20-year-old Latina-American DREAMer Jess Morales (Lisette Olivera) who sets out to uncover the mysteries of her family’s history and discovers them tied to something from the past that she could never have imagined.
For our non-American readers, “Dreamers” get their name from the DREAM Act. This was a proposed bill that aimed to grant legal status to young immigrants residing in the U.S. unlawfully after being brought in by their parents.
The DREAM Act bill proposed a pathway to permanent residency for undocumented immigrants if they were brough here illegally by their parents. It was considered by Congress in 2007 but failed due to filibuster and political manoeuvring. According to the New York Times this failure to pass is what spurred then President Obama to sign DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).
The more you know…
National Treasure: Edge Of History will run for ten-episodes. It also stars original franchise actor Justin Bartha, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jordan Rodrigues, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Jacob Vargas and Lyndon Smith. Bartha’s inclusion means it is likely it takes place in the same universe as the original movies.
It is expected to be one of the key reveals at Disney’s Comic-Con Hall H presentation later this summer. This will be the first in-person San Diego Comic Con since the pandemic cancellations.
