The official HBO Max synopsis reads –
“A washed-up mixed martial arts fighter named Cole Young is unaware of his hidden lineage or why he is being hunted down by Sub-Zero of the Lin-Kuei clan of assassins. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm in a high-stakes battle against the forces of Outworld.”
Speaking about bringing the villain Shang Tsung to life, actor Chin Han said –
“He is this sorcerer, to be faithful to the source material. He consumes souls and is a shape-shifter, but he also has this appetite that makes him a force of nature”
“There is a very dark humor to him. But, befitting the times, there is a degree of authenticity to the role. You will find that with all the characters – their motivations are believable. There are real stakes here.”
Filling out the rest of the cast are Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Josh Lawson as Kano, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, with Lewis Tan in the role of Cole Young, an original character created for the film.
Simon McQuoid was hired as director in November 2016, marking his feature directorial debut, with Greg Russo writing the script.
Mortal Kombat will be released theaters and HBO Max in the US on April 16th. The movie will be available in UK cinemas later in 2021.
