Apparently, Mortal Kombat has been well received by audiences, which is news to some of us.

Greg Russo, who wrote and did the screenplay for Mortal Kombat, is now working on a movie for Space Invaders. Remember…when rolling your eyes, you need to blink and maybe rest your eyes for a moment afterward and don’t rub them too hard.

Greg Russo has said about Space Invaders:

Space Invaders is over at Warner Bros, and it’s at New Line, too, the same kind of crew that put together Mortal Kombat, and that’s one I’m really excited about.

That’s a movie when I approached it I was like, ‘I don’t want to do Independence Day.’ That was basically, I think, that was the one thing I said, ‘I don’t want to do the invasion movie I’ve seen 100 times.’

And so for me, it was about finding a new way into that title, which I think is going to really blow people away expectations-wise and they’re going to see something that hopefully they weren’t expecting, so I’m excited for it.

Hmmm, after seeing Mortal Kombat, personally I cannot say I have big expectations about Space Invaders. In an interview with Greg at We Got This Covered, he also states he’s working on a Saints Row movie directed by F. Gary Gray and the new Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City directed by Johannes Roberts.

Video game to movie conversions haven’t had a good history, even something like Tomb Raider only having movies which are average at best, and that that’s both of the Angelina Jolie ones.

The undisputed king of ruined video games to movies is Uwe Boll, churning out movies like Alone in the Dark, Postal, Bloodrayne, Farcry, Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale to name a few. At one time Uwe tried to get the rights to make The World of Warcraft but was laughed out of the office. Uwe said about World Of Warcraft:

I got in contact with Paul Sams of Blizzard [about a World of Warcraft film] and he said, ‘We will not sell the movie rights, not to you…especially not to you,’.

Because it’s such a big online game success, maybe a bad movie would destroy that ongoing income.

After all that, the World of Warcraft movie was, again, only about average.

World of Warcraft

Will Greg Russo breathe new life into video game to movie conversions? Or just be another Uwe Boll? Only time will tell.
