Director James Mangold made Cop Land, Walk The Line, Logan, and Ford vs Ferrari (Le Mans ’66) so he is well and truly capable of pissing excellence. However, the specter of current Lucasfilm is lurking and we all saw what happened last time they tried to return to the world of Indiana Jones. Can Mangold pull off something magical with Indy 5?
Filming wrapped back in February and there is a year of post-production before we see what they have created for Indy 5. That means an entire year of everyone involved in it being asked about it.
Mads Mikkelsen is out doing the promotional rounds for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore and The Hollywood Reporter asked the same question we would all have asked any star of the upcoming movie. How is Indiana Jones 5 shaping up? He talks about tone and inspiration:
“[‘Raiders of The Lost Ark’] was one of my favourite films, and it just oozed that golden period of serials from the 1940s – and that’s in the fifth film as well. They’re going heavily back to the first and second film and getting that original feel, the original Indy, something dense and epic. It felt like a Spielberg film, though it’s obviously James making it with the same vision.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renee Wilson, and Toby Jones round out the rest of the cast for Indy 5, which opens in cinemas on June 30th, 2023 at which point Harrison Ford will be a few days away from turning 81.
