Hulu has released an official trailer for its new series based on the life of boxing legend Mike Tyson. The series, simply titled Mike, is from Steven Rogers. No, not Captain America you heathens, the man who gave us I, Tonya.
Trevante Rhodes, who previously starred in Moonlight, laces up the gloves and looks like he’s gone all in for this show. Personally I don’t think he looks much like Iron Mike but he sure has the voice and mannerism down to a T.
Alongside him is Harvey Keitel as Cus D’Amato, legendary boxing trainer, mentor and beloved father figure to Mike Tyson.
This Is A Movie Site Eggy
I know, but I love boxing. It was the sport I was raised on. Most of my heroes growing up were boxers – Ali, Hearns, and Leonard. As I got older I watched in awe at Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank’s vicious rivalry. Then there was Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and, of course, Mike Tyson tearing into one another.
I originally went off on one with this article and it ended up about 900 pages long so I’ve had to remind myself that this is a movie website, I’ll just give you the basics.
The Rollercoasther Life Of Tysthon
That’s the last lisp joke I promise. Mike chronicles the life of the youngest man ever to win the heavyweight title who went on to be known as the Baddest Man On The Planet both for his exploits inside and outside the ring.
Tyson’s life story is so completely insane that if you had never heard of him and only watched a movie of his life, you would think it was one of the most ridiculous things you had ever seen.
By the age of 13, he had been arrested 38 times for crimes that included robbery and mugging. Tyson was sent to reform school in upstate New York in 1978 where he discovered boxing and was able to turn his life around.
He went on to win Junior Olympic Championship gold medals before turning pro at just 19. And by the age of 21 (1986) he had cleaned up the entire Heavyweight division and had become the youngest Heavyweight Champion Of The World. A record that still stands today.
Highs and Lows
With the highs come the lows, especially in boxing. Tyson in his prime had a net worth of $700 million and was treated like a God.
Old demons are hard to kill though, and there was a string of unruly behaviour such as street fights, and a very public and tumultuous marriage. Mike also spent time inside for the rape of Desiree Washington.
Upon his release and ring return he regained the world title, before infamously biting off a chunk of Holyfield’s ear and being condemned by the world of boxing. Add a drink and cocaine addiction, it is no surprise Tyson lost everything.
Now is mid 50s, Tyson seems to have calmed. Happily married with children, and successful cannabis business called Tyson 2.0, and a great podcast called Hotboxing.
Tyson is universally adored by boxing fans and will go down in history as one of the top 10 heavyweights of all time. His story really is one of rags to riches, back to rags and then back to riches. But most importantly Iron Mike seems to have finally found peace with himself and I for one cannot wait for this series.
Mike is released 25th August.
