Tom To Play Unexpected Role
Tom Cruise’s frequent collaborator, Chris McQuarrie says he has an idea for a new film that features the actor in a completely different light.
The director, who has previous with Cruise working on the Mission: Impossible and Jack Reacher franchises, said he had discussed making an R-rated Jack Reacher movie with the actor following the successes of Deadpool and Joker.
McQuarrie told Empire –
“Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take ‘Reacher‘ to a place where, in the post-‘Deadpool‘, post-‘Joker‘ world, ‘Reacher‘ could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books. We were fully ready to lean into that.”
“It’s a very un-Tom character, and we have plans for an even more un-Tom character that we’ve been talking about, which I’m hopeful about in the future,”
“The franchise has moved on, and we haven’t. So we’ve now got stuff in the hopper. The [Jack Reacher] stuff we’re talking about now is tinker toys [compared to it], I’m actually very, very excited.”
McQuarrie had previously told the Empire podcast that Cruise was growing somewhat tired of his own action films and wanted to go back to basics doing dramas.
It’ll be a hell of a wait, however, the two have two more Mission: Impossible installments to come first (rumoured to be the finale), and then we have the Edge Of Tomorrow and Top Gun sequels. The project sounds very interesting though.
