Matthew McConaughey will return as defense attorney Jake Brigance in an upcoming HBO Max series that serves as a sequel to A Time To Kill.
In 1996, McConaughey played lawyer Jake Brigance in Joel Schumacher’s A Time To Kill, a film based on the novel by John Grisham.
McConaughey will play the character again for the HBO series A Time For Mercy. The series is based on yet another Grisham novel, which is actually the third Grisham book to feature the Jake Brigance character and has the lawyer defending a sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local cop in a town in Mississippi.
Here’s Grisham’s synopsis for A Time For Mercy –
“Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.”
The movie A Time To Kill also starred Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Spacey, Oliver Platt, Charles S. Dutton, Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland, Brenda Fricker, and Ashley Judd. The movie earned immense critical acclaim and was a smash hit at the box office, and for his part, McConaughey won Best Breakthrough Performance at the MTV Movie Awards.
McConaughey has also kept busy with other endeavors outside of his acting career. Last year, he released his new memoir Greenlights to great success. He has since teased a move into politics when he said that running for governor of Texas was something he was genuinely considering.
