Marvel Studios has officially delayed the release dates for four of its major movies and several untitled projects. Blade, Deadpool 3, Fantastic Four, Avengers: Secret Wars, have all been pushed back as a consequence of the near-complete collapse of the new Blade film.
Trouble With The Day Walker
Director, Bassam Tariq recently walked away from Blade citing “continued schedule shifts”. However, soon after this, Marvel shut down production completely due to reports of upheaval on the set, including concerns about a sub-par script.
This obviously adds fuel to the fire that Tariq’s departure was actually due to the director’s constant clashes with the movie’s star, Mahershala Ali. Tariq reportedly tried adding elements to the Blade script in an attempt to improve it, which the Oscar-winning actor did not approve of.
Movie reporter Jeff Sneider broke details on the state of the script and revealed that it was only about 90 pages long. It also only had two action sequences, and Marvel found them to be lackluster at best.
Considering the entirety of Phase 4 has been a damp squib with the likes of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love And Thunder receiving less than favorable reviews. Add that to the ‘action sequences’ in their tent pole series She-Hulk, and one must wonder how abysmal must the Blade script and action scenes have been for Marvel to take such decisive action.
The knock-on effect of Blade has now impacted Marvel’s Phase 6. The film that started this domino effect, Blade, has moved from November 2023 to September 2024.
Other upcoming Phase 5 films untouched (so far) include Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, Captain America: New World Order, and Thunderbolts.
Blade is now pushed back and finishes Phase 5 and considering how interlocked Marvel movies are, I’m interested to know how this affects those films in Phase 5 that are already deep into production. Last-minute script changes, edits, post-production reshoots?
Phase 6 Delays
So the delays to Phase 6 are as follows. The recently announced Deadpool 3 has gone from September 2024 to November 2024, and the eagerly awaited Fantastic Four has shifted from November 2024 to February 2025.
For now, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty remains in its May 2025 schedule, so the delay of Secret Wars gives it some breathing space. An untitled Marvel film has been pushed from February 2025 to November 2025.
Avengers: Secret Wars has been delayed from November 2025 to May 2026, and another untitled Marvel film set for May 2026 has been removed from Disney’s calendar altogether.
From the studio that was once the most envied, well-oiled machine in Hollywood, delivering hit after hit after hit, Marvel is reduced to nothing more than a disorganized shit show serving up mediocrity at best. Go woke and all that.
