I’m a Barbie Girl, in a Barbie Woooooorld…sorry, but I have an earworm, so you can all have one! It’s because of the news that Margot Robbie will be playing Barbie in a new movie.
Barbie is to be directed by Greta Gerwig and written by her, and her partner, Noah Baumback.
The plot, at the moment, is:
A doll living in ‘Barbieland’ is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world. A Live-action feature film based on the popular line of Barbie toys.
It wasn’t 100% that Gerwig was going to direct, but Robbie confirmed the director in an interview with British Vogue:
People generally hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be’, and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…
Originally, Barbie was going to be played by Amy Schumer, but was replaced with Robbie, who is also producing the movie. She has said that the Mattel toy wouldn’t just be a cute blonde:
It will be something totally different… a little left of center… Our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted.’
The Barbie doll launched in March 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of the doll using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration. It’s reported that Mattel sold over $1 billion worth of Barbie dolls and accessories in 2021…that is a potentially huge market for a movie.
The movie hasn’t yet begun production and has no release date at the moment.
